European Splendor

Project notes

A neighborhood favorite, the European Splendor. Built in 1862, this grand home was once the residence of U.S. Representative John W. Candler, a prominent figure in the late 19th century. Over 160 years old, the building’s architecture speaks to a bygone era. We have done extensive work to this property over the years.

In 2013, we added a brand new—and much needed—HVAC system. We also took an unfinished attic and created a full lounge. Complete with a bar flown in from Europe, a wine tasting corner, a tucked-away theater, a cigar room complete with a humidor and a stained glass skylight over both the theater and staircase. All areas of the attic were finished with period-authentic, beautiful millwork. This amazing opportunity was awarded the Gold Medal for Best Historic Renovation of 2013 by BRAGB, the Builders and Remodelers Association of Greater Boston.

In 2024, we took the failing slate roof and completely replaced it. The project took over three months to complete, with more than 7,200 individual slates and over 20,000 copper nails spanning 2,600 square feet. The roof’s turret was also wrapped in new copper—meticulously hand-fabricated on site.

In 2025, we completed a full paint restoration of the house’s exterior that included sanding all the windows, window trim, and exterior trim down to bare wood, followed by a complete paint job and full reglazing of all 120-plus windows.

We are ecstatic to have had the opportunity to help restore and preserve this magnificent estate.
